U - 8 Practice #3

U-8 Week 3

Note: U-8 boys, please check blog Monday evening regarding location of soccer practice and game this week.

Games this week: A reminder for U-8 games this season that teams will start with a 20 minute warm up prior to their game. Games will have 15 minute halves with a 5 minute break at half.
Warm Up Suggestions prior to game:
a. You could start with a game of tag and/or have pairs of players passing ball back and forth within a grid while moving around grid.
b. Group Activity - Choose one of the activities focusing on ball control below perhaps one you did not get to earlier in week.
c. Get ready for game :)

Theme:  ball control
-be in ready/athletic position, balls of feet
-get in line with the flight of the ball
-early selection of playing surface
-make first touch playable, not too far ahead
- cushion ball with receiving part of body (foot, thigh ...)

Warm Up:
5-10  min. Survivor Game - Same game that was played at soccer clinic. 20X30 meter grid (island). Have players pretend to be different animals on island. Have them fly like an eagle, jump like a rabbit, run like a cheetah, crawl like a worm etc. Can set up a safe area where animals can run to if they are being chased by another animal. Be creative. Get them moving and stretching and having fun.

5 min Chasing Ball: Each player with a ball. Players give ball to coach who throws them out into field. Players retrieve ball, dribble it back to coach who will then throw ball out again. See video. Fun activity.

Game: 5-10 min
Focus on ball control.
4 vs 4 game. Same as last week, to score team must pass and receive ball over end line. No nets for this activity. I saw some great passing and ball control last week by teams. Keep it up!

Technical Group Activities: (20-25 minutes)  Choose 2 or 3 activities.
Demonstrate proper technique with regards to receiving the ball (see coaching points above).

Receiving with Feeders: Half the players given pinnies and are spread out in corners of 20X20 m grid. One feeder in middle of grid. Non pinnies move around to feeders receiving ball and passing back. Progress to feeders gently throwing to players thigh who receive ball and then passing back.
See video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNthHFTiP_I

or , set up two lines of cones, passing distance apart.  Pass across to opposite side, follow pass.  Receive with one foot, pass with the other.  Once ball gets to end dribble ball back to start of line.  Get a second & third? ball going to ensure people are alert and on their toes.  Just watch video for drill pattern, you will note that they are not doing a good job of receiving with one foot and passing with the other.  I really want you to work on this good first touch.

Corner passes: 20 X 20 grid. One feeder on each corner of grid with ball. Two players in middle. One player will try to receive ball from corner players and then pass back while other player will be defending against this player. To start you may want to have defensive player only try 50% to give offensive player success to start. See video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi9J2uRirZc

Uneven Game: In a 20x20 grid split your team into an uneven number of players such as 6 vs 3.
Give the smaller number pinnies. The larger group's goal is to make 10 passes without the ball either leaving the grid or ball being won by the defenders. Pinney's goal is to win ball and make 3 passes. Losing team does 10 pushups. Switch players often.  Focus on good first touch so set up for a pass and using space within the grid.

Game: 10-15 minutes
4 vs 4 or 5 vs 5 game.  Regular soccer rules. Use nets if you want. Coach good ball control.

U6 practice plan - week 2 (May 7)

Great start last week!  Only Kendra at your practice this week.
Please note:  next week (May 14) is a dress up day and we will do stations (more on this next week).  Dress up in your favourite costume.  Theme:  anything goes from princesses to superhero's to ladybugs...or some kind of mix - it's wacky Wednesday!

Focus skill:  passing
cues:

-non kicking foot next to the ball
-strike ball with side of foot, firm ankle, heel pointed down
-follow through to target

Warm up:
Donkey Tails

Half the players are given a pinni to tuck into the back of their shorts as a tail. Coach shouts “Go!” players without a tail attempt to grab a tail from the players with one. Once players get a tail they must now avoid having it taken.

Game:  Chain Soccer

Focus – Small sided Game
Set up a small grid, depending on number of players. Separate players/parents into 2 teams as shown below. Number players 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Call out a number. That numbered player/parent combo from each team enters into the field to challenge for the ball. Players try to score on opposing side while defending their own side. Parents and players not called can act as goalies on their side.
Alternatives
Harder (U6) – No parents. Ask children to link arms and work together to stop goals. Harder (U6) – Increase the # of players called into the grid to 2 or 3.

Activity:
Topple me Coconuts:

(Active Start session 8 and there is video too)
Split players into 2 teams and have them line-up as shown below. Place balls on top of cones like coconuts. Ask players to alternate making passes/shots to try and knock the ball off of a cone. If a player is successful they can go and retrieve both balls and bring them back to their side. Encourage celebrations!
Or Circle Game (in byte sized coaching binder) I will bring out a bunch of tall cones

Or try soccer bowling:
Soccer bowling (shooting/passing accuracy)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKGyrJGmJNk&feature=relmfu

Pac Man (also known as Kick the coach)
Gird (15x15), all kids have ball and try to hit you with a pass (you don't want to be hit).  Working on good passing technique.  You may have to create a zone for you that the kids can't enter (small square in middle of grid and then move to no square and everyone moving).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9AJNANVrRA
(this video all demos passing technique with cues.

Clean Your Room.
Split grid in half and place half of player in each half grid with balls.  They must PASS not kick ball into other half of grid, keeping your half or room clean until coach says done.  Count balls in each half.

Games, cheer, snack!

U4/5 practice plan - week 2 - May 7

Great start last week.  This week try and get things rolling quickly.  Only Kendra is at your practice this week.
Don't forget to get those parents involved...we don't want them getting too comfortable!
Please note:  next week (May 14) is a dress up day and we will do stations (more on this next week).  Dress up in your favourite costume.  Theme:  anything goes from princesses to superhero's to ladybugs...or some kind of mix - it's wacky Wednesday!

Focus skill:  passing
coaching points for passing:
-non kicking/planting foot next to ball
-non kicking/planting foot pointing at target
-strike ball with side of foot with ankle locked

Warm up:
Pirate Ship
Grid is a Pirate Ship, talk like a pirate and get them excited.
You are the captain, here are the commands, introduce them 2 at a time.
-"Captain's coming/Salute the captain"....stop dribbling and put foot on ball and salute you
-"Scrub the decks" = on the spot the kids roll the ball backwards and forwards using the bottom of their foot. Use both feet!
-"Climb the rigging".....toe taps (and make the hands climb too)

-"Man overboard" = the kids dribble quickly to the edge of the ship (area), place their foot on the ball, hand on their forehead as if their looking for somebody. On your command the kids wil continue dribbling.
-"Fire the Cannon" = the kids kick their soccer ball using the inside of their foot as far away as possible outside of the ship toward other pirates. Once all balls have been kicked the kids can retrieve their soccer balls and carry on dribbling.
-"Seagulls are coming" = You pretend to be a seagull who wants to eat their soccer ball. The kids on hearing this command will drop to the floor quickly and protect their ball with their body and hands. You should run around the ship with your arms out like a bird until you tell them to carry on dribbling.

Numbers Game:  (in Active Start curric.)

Set up a small grid, depending on number of players. Separate players into 2 teams as shown below. Number players 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Call out a number. That numbered player on each team must race around the cones into the field where a ball is placed. Players must attempt to score on their opponent’s goal while defending their own. Encourage celebrations after a goal!
Alternatives
Easier: have them just run it as a race with a ball in their hand and have them throw the ball in goal Easier (U4): Put two balls so each can score goals

Pirate Pete
(can be found in Active start program)
Divide the players into two teams. Put the teams in two different pinnie colors. One team has to run through the channel to get to the treasure (balls). The other team kicks/passes across the channel to partner trying to hit the other team with the ball below the knee as they run through. If players get struck by the ball they have to go back and try again. When players get to treasure (Ball) they bring back a piece back to their ship (they can dribble or carry it depending on their level). Players change roles after a set time. Count the pieces (Balls) each team collects.
Variations Easier (U4): Players can role the ball rather than kick it. Players can carry treasure back in their hands. Parents can help. Harder: Players can shoot the ball. Players can dribble both ways with the ball.

Nuts and Squirrels
(can be found in Active Start plans session 1)
15 x 15 grid - 4 small goals or "hoarding areas/trees" on sides or corners of grid.....all balls (nuts) in middle of grid.  Kids (squirrels) in pairs or 3's depending on numbers in each goal/hoarding area.  Coach shouts "go" players take turns running into the middle and dribbling back a ball back hoarding area (trying to get as many nuts as they can), when there are no balls left in the middle coach yells "steal" or something else appropriate and then they may try and steal nuts from anywhere (other hoarding areas).  No defending the nuts!  After they understand the game, have them pass the ball back to their team/house.

Soccer Bowling
Soccer bowling (shooting/passing accuracy)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKGyrJGmJNk&feature=relmfu

Crocs and Swamps
http://www2.bytesizecoaching.com/WebPageDisplay.php?wpname=Swamps
in the byte sized coaching binder you have.
or
make two lines of cones heading towards the net, the kids need to pass to parent/coach and not hit the crocs (cones) and then shoot on net.ach side of the grid (use cones or grab a couple of arches which I will bring to the field).  Put parents/coaches in goals and then have the kids work on dribbling around and shooting on each goal.  Count how many times you score!

Games, cheer, snack!

Passing & Support – Square to Sqaure
You may want to try this one.

Organization:
· Set-up area 20x10m
· Divide players into groups of four.
· One group in possession against one opponent in one 10x10m square.
· One square vacant to begin with.
Coaching Points:
· Accurate passes with good ball speed.
· Open your body to the play when receiving a pass.
· Support in triangles – wide and deep.
· Don’t support too close to the ball. Remember: distance = time.
Description:
1. Two groups compete against one another as follows: Four red players v 1 white player in a one square, with three white players resting outside the square at the halfway line. The coach serves the ball to the red team and they must make at least three passes after which they can pass the ball into the next square for one of the group to run onto. If successful all four red players move into the next square and, again try to get at least three passes and play back into the original square. If the red team is successful the defending white player steps out and a new defender enters the next square attempting to win the ball. If the red team should pass the ball out of bounds, or the defender wins the ball, the coach serves the next ball into the other square to the white players and one of the reds becomes a defender, while the other rest outside the area. Every successful movement from one square to the next = 1 point. First team to 10 points is the winner.
Progression: As above but 3v1 in one square, with fourth player in other square. Switch squares with a pass to the fourth player.

Game:  10-15 minutes.

Simon Says. Use a way to warm up body. Include movements up and down, change in direction. Check out video for great ideas.

Pac ManGird (15x15), all kids have ball and try to hit you with a pass (you don't want to be hit).  Working on good passing technique.  You may have to create a zone for you that the kids can't enter (small square in middle of grid and then move to no square and everyone moving).
(this video all demos passing technique with cues.

Game: 5-10 minutes
4 v 4. To score you must pass ball over end line to receiving player.
Focus on passing. Praise players who are passing well and correct periodically to help them improve their passing skills and decisions.

Technical Activities. 20-25 minutes
Choose 3 or so activities.

Passing through cones. A good drill to review the skills of passing.

Passing Cone game.
20X30 grid.  2 players to a ball.  At least 6 goals spread around grid (2 cones 3m apart). Pairs of players pass ball through cones. Start without having time challenge. Can progress to seeing how many “goals” scored in one minute. Check out video.

Passing and Receiving Triangles
Simple drill passing and following your pass.  Working on receiving with one foot and passing with the other.
Just watch video to get idea of pattern of drill...

Passing - with feeders
20x20/15x15 grid.  Put half the kids in pinnies (they are the feeders to start) and have feeders spread out around the grid.  The other kids are receivers, they cut to a ball and call for a pass, receive pass and pass it back to feeder, then cut to a new ball.  (good time to talk about weight of pass and appropriate passing distance (DEMO this)).  Then switch the feeders and the receivers.

Game: 5-10 minutes
4 vs 4 Regular rules. Focus on passing. Praise players who are passing well and correct when needed to help them improve their passing skills and decisions.

U4/5 Practice & Game plan Week 1- April 30

Find your number on the field and set up shop!  Ensure you grab a pop up net and figure out where the team you are playing at the end is located for a quick transition.
Don't forget to introduce yourself.
Remember to give water breaks between drills.
Some of the 3 year olds may be done after 30 minutes.
It's okay if kids carry the ball around, instead of kick it, keep encouraging them to kick it.
Remember for many of these kids this is their first time participating in an organized sport, there will be different abilities to comprehend and do the drills.  Don't forget to demo, demo, demo what you want to see and have fun, because if you're having fun, they will have fun!  Be animated!!!

At 4:30ish the horn will go, indicating it is time to move to your games.  It is supposed to be 3v3, so you may want to have two games going with the other team (you can play 4v4 with one of the 4 being a goalie too).  Or have everyone play, whatever suits you and the other team.  They won't know where the boundaries are, help them out by running around the perimeter with them and help them to understand what they are supposed to do.  If it goes out, just kick a new ball in, we'll introduce throw ins later on.  The game is not the best use of time at this age but it is good to begin to play and it is the expectation of the parents that they play the beautiful game.  It's okay to have more than one ball going to encourage more people to play and touch the ball.  At 4:45 the horn will go again indicating the end of the session & snack time.  **Don't forget to have a big cheer at the end of your game for your team and the other team and then go and high 5 the other team!!  VERY important....cheer & high 5's then Snack and social.

*Don't feel you need to do all the drills below
*Enthusiasm goes a  long way!

Focus skill- dribbling

Skill cues:  lots of LITTLE touches on the ball
                  keep the ball close
                  try and look up

1.  Warm up - freeze tag no balls to start, if you get tagged, freeze until someone comes and unfreezes you (show them how to freeze, legs apart, arms up and out)....then move to playing with balls, if you get tagged person unfreezes them by passing the ball between your legs (demo this).  You are dribbling around until you get tagged.

2.  Superheros
Have all kids dribble (show them) around the grid and when you shout superman/woman, everyone dives on the ball (lie on ball so it's under chest) and puts arm up like superman/woman, when you shout batman, they put foot on ball and pretend to fly, when you shout Spiderman they put foot on ball and pretend to spin a web (spidyhands), when you shout Hulk, they pick up ball and squeeze it and roar like the hulk.

3.  Red light, Green light
Players move around the grid dribbling the ball – when coach shouts red light players stop. Green light players go. Go speeding – players go faster. Crash - players dive on their ball.  Be creative, yellow light slow down etc...

3.  Indy 500/Race track
(can be found in Active Start plan 2)
Creat an oval race track that kids&parents can run/drive around, with your cones and a square "pit" on one side with all the balls. "Start your engines"
Players start from “Pit row” with parents. Player starts by exiting the pits and dribbling the ball in a clockwise direction around the track following their parent. If the ball exits the track they must make 3 toe taps on the ball to restart the engine. Parent and player can switch roles with child following parents. Encourage players to make “Vroom! Vroom!” car sounds while driving!
Alternatives
**Easier – run the track first with no balls.**good idea so they understand the boundary and then make the next lap with balls. Easier – players carry ball in hands and run around track Harder – Have players drive the truck on their own. Harder – Switch directions and have drivers go counter-clockwise. Harder – Change direction before completing circuit on coaches’ command

4.  Shark/British Bull Dog
15 x 15 grid or so.  Have players (fish/pirates) with balls on one end of the grid and coach (shark) in the middle, the players need to get to the other side of grid to get to the sunken ship/pirate ship or to safety.  If the shark tags you before you reach the other side (then you become a shark/it too).  First round play no balls just running, second round play that the players need to dribble the ball to the other side.
http://www.coachingsoccer101.com/tag1.htm

5.  Rock Soccer
Two teams, two small grids (treasure chests) in each teams half.  Line up all balls in the middle.  On "go" players run and dribble a ball and put into treasure chest, once all balls gone from middle go and steal balls from other teams treasure chest (no checking/tackling to get balls).  Goal to get more treasure!
