U - 8 Practice #3

U-8 Week 3

Note: U-8 boys, please check blog Monday evening regarding location of soccer practice and game this week.

Games this week: A reminder for U-8 games this season that teams will start with a 20 minute warm up prior to their game. Games will have 15 minute halves with a 5 minute break at half.
Warm Up Suggestions prior to game:
a. You could start with a game of tag and/or have pairs of players passing ball back and forth within a grid while moving around grid.
b. Group Activity - Choose one of the activities focusing on ball control below perhaps one you did not get to earlier in week.
c. Get ready for game :)

Theme:  ball control
-be in ready/athletic position, balls of feet
-get in line with the flight of the ball
-early selection of playing surface
-make first touch playable, not too far ahead
- cushion ball with receiving part of body (foot, thigh ...)

Warm Up:
5-10  min. Survivor Game - Same game that was played at soccer clinic. 20X30 meter grid (island). Have players pretend to be different animals on island. Have them fly like an eagle, jump like a rabbit, run like a cheetah, crawl like a worm etc. Can set up a safe area where animals can run to if they are being chased by another animal. Be creative. Get them moving and stretching and having fun.

5 min Chasing Ball: Each player with a ball. Players give ball to coach who throws them out into field. Players retrieve ball, dribble it back to coach who will then throw ball out again. See video. Fun activity.

Game: 5-10 min
Focus on ball control.
4 vs 4 game. Same as last week, to score team must pass and receive ball over end line. No nets for this activity. I saw some great passing and ball control last week by teams. Keep it up!

Technical Group Activities: (20-25 minutes)  Choose 2 or 3 activities.
Demonstrate proper technique with regards to receiving the ball (see coaching points above).

Receiving with Feeders: Half the players given pinnies and are spread out in corners of 20X20 m grid. One feeder in middle of grid. Non pinnies move around to feeders receiving ball and passing back. Progress to feeders gently throwing to players thigh who receive ball and then passing back.
See video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNthHFTiP_I

or , set up two lines of cones, passing distance apart.  Pass across to opposite side, follow pass.  Receive with one foot, pass with the other.  Once ball gets to end dribble ball back to start of line.  Get a second & third? ball going to ensure people are alert and on their toes.  Just watch video for drill pattern, you will note that they are not doing a good job of receiving with one foot and passing with the other.  I really want you to work on this good first touch.

Corner passes: 20 X 20 grid. One feeder on each corner of grid with ball. Two players in middle. One player will try to receive ball from corner players and then pass back while other player will be defending against this player. To start you may want to have defensive player only try 50% to give offensive player success to start. See video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi9J2uRirZc

Uneven Game: In a 20x20 grid split your team into an uneven number of players such as 6 vs 3.
Give the smaller number pinnies. The larger group's goal is to make 10 passes without the ball either leaving the grid or ball being won by the defenders. Pinney's goal is to win ball and make 3 passes. Losing team does 10 pushups. Switch players often.  Focus on good first touch so set up for a pass and using space within the grid.

Game: 10-15 minutes
4 vs 4 or 5 vs 5 game.  Regular soccer rules. Use nets if you want. Coach good ball control.
