Final Week of Soccer information - IMPORTANT

Hello coaches,
Thanks again for all the time you have put in this season with your players.  We hope you enjoy the last week, lots of new drill ideas on the blog.

Rory and myself will be doing player evaluations this week, so we will not necessarily available at practices to help you out (we will let you know if we are available).  Do ask questions of us if you have them, we will be around.  To help us with player evaluations please USE the practice plans provided this week and make sure you also include both Games (remember we are using GAG methodology which means we provide the players two opportunities to play/scrimmage in practice around the technical session).  It is also important to coach the technical session portions of practice.  Thank you!!!

If you are running 3 team mixed games this week (all 3 team groupings) please ensure someone is timing if you are playing two fields and that someone is taking charge of the pinnie team.

If you have not seen the Saturday wind up schedule go to www.revsoccer.com.

We also want to hear feedback from you on the season.  I will send out a short survey later this week or early next week but if there are things happening that you would like to see change provide some constructive feedback on a feedback form on the RYSA website.  New ideas are always welcome!

Thanks again for all your time and effort,
Kendra and Rory

U4/5 practice - week of June16

Just a reminder that this is the final week of soccer.  Wednesday we will do a final round of stations and then play your games.  Saturday morning is the wind up, games, awards and food!  Thanks for all the time and hard work you put into soccer this year - the kids were fortunate to have such a strong group of coaches, WELL DONE!!
For the stations, if you have two coaches one can coach the station and one can take the group around or whatever works for you, an able bodied parent can take the group around too.
I will have a key this week so we will have access to hoops and hurdles etc....and the horn which will go every 7 minutes to switch stations.  There will be a double horn to get going and a double horn to switch to games.

Pirate Pete - Pat/Lili  &  Megan & Mark

(can be found in Active start program)
Divide the players into two teams. Put the teams in two different pinnie colors. One team has to run through the channel to get to the treasure (balls). The other team kicks the ball to the player running through the channel mate trying to hit the other team with the ball below the knee as they run through. If players get struck by the ball they have to go back and try again. When players get to treasure (Ball) they bring back a piece back to their ship. Players change roles after a set time. Count the pieces (Balls) each team collects.
Variations Easier (U4): Players can role the ball rather than kick it. Players can carry treasure back in their hands. Parents can help. Harder (U6): Players can shoot the ball. Players can dribble both ways with the ball.
coaching points for passing:
-non kicking/planting foot next to ball
-non kicking/planting foot pointing at target
-strike ball with side of foot with ankle locked

Swamps & Crocs - Meghan M/Kelly   &   Kris/Danica
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6VFPFBsndU

Obstacle course - Jocelyn/Dan/Elmer & Steph/Nikki  - get some hoops, hurdles and ladders from storage, use your cones, pinnies etc...& make a theme, jungle, dessert island, space etc.... and do it up - have fun!

Donkey Tails & Freeze Tag - Patrick   &   Alei/Jessa
-get half the kids to tuck pinnies into their shorts as tails - other half chase and try to get the tails, if you get a tail put it into your shorts like a tail and the person who lost their tail becomes a chaser

This week for games try and play with one ball.  You might have to play two smaller games if you have a lot of kids.  Keep a large supply at hand so you can roll the next ball in when one goes out of play etc...

U6 - week of June 19

Hey coaches, it's the final week of soccer!  This week we have regular soccer on Wednesday and then the wind up on Saturday - games, awards & food!  Well done all season long!  Thanks for making soccer such a success for all these U6 players.

This week we are going to try and review all the skills!!!

Warm up - Foxes & Farmers (see link) or Donkey Tails (give half the kids pinnies to tuck into their shorts and then the other half chase and try to get a tail.  If they get a tail they can put it into their shorts and the player that lost their tail becomes the chaser.

U10 practice/games week of June 18 & 20

U10 boys - Tuesday - mixed scrimmages.  Have each team give 3 players to a 4th team (team pinnie)- someone will need to coach this team Jeff Wilson/Guy?.  Then play three sets of 15-20 minute games, depending on organization time.  Someone (a parent? or coach?) will need to be the time keeper.

Field 1 - Pinnies vrs Green                       Field 2- Red vrs Orange

U10 girls - Thursday mixed scrimmages.  Let's do what we did at the end of practice on Thursday, each team gives up 2-3 players to make a fourth pinnie team...Natalie can you organize this again and be the time keeper please.  If one set of teams is smaller push the goals to the tops of the boxes again. Play three 15-20 minute games.  Schedule below or whatever you decide.
Field 1- Pinnies vrs Gold                        Field 2 - Purple vrs Green

Practice Plan for Team 1 (girls Tuesday, boys Thursday)
Don't forget to play both your scrimmages, one after the warm up and one at the end.  This is very important, the kids want to play the game so ensure you provide the opportunity.  Only let the first scrimmage last 10 minutes.  Try and switch your drills quickly, really you should never spend more than 10 minutes at this age on a drill.  And have fun, because if you are having fun so are the players!

U4/5 - June 12

Great job on the stations last week and thank you for those who were flexible and changed at the last minute!

Warm up-  soccer tag with a twist

http://www.soccerxpert.com/soccerdrills/id1256.aspx

Obstacle course-make your own version or try a themed one such as Star Wars (see link)
http://www.bytesizecoaching.com/secure/games/210_star_wars_u46.php

Goal keeping review

Review basics, starting on knees with basic scoop technique (I like to use the term 'lock the box' so they bring ball under complete control) rolling it back and forth with a partner.  Could have them dive from knees...then move to standing up and scooping (don't let it go through legs!).  Play game where you spread balls around grid and they run around grid, when you say ball or dive they jump on a ball, play like musical chairs but keep everyone playing...make sure there is one less ball so they have to hunt every time.

Passing drill- from bytesized coaching try skittle alley or soccer bowling (both are good if it's hot as they are a little less active
http://www.bytesizecoaching.com/secure/games/209_skittle_alley_u46.php
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKGyrJGmJNk&feature=relmfu

Need one more?  How about 4 goal shooting, 4 goals put parents in net tell them to play up the drama and have the kids go try and score on each goal.

Games!

U6 - June 12

Hey stations ran great last week - well done!
Rory will be at your practice this week.  Regular practice with your own crew.  Let Rory know if you would like to do stations again for the last week or keep it rolling with your own team.

Just a reminder of the wind up on Saturday June 22nd.  I think...think....that format will be similar to Soccer Saturday with a few tweaks.  Send an email to me if you have any feedback from Super Soggy Soccer Saturday that you think may help on wind up day or for future!  (vonbremen@hotmail.com)

Warm up - try this version of soccer tag
http://www.soccerxpert.com/soccerdrills/id1256.aspx

Obstacle course - we will have arches ready feel free to make a themed obstacle course (castle, star wars etc...)

Shooting Drill
Pick your favourite shooting drill (could be as simple as 4 goal shooting with a parent/kid (or a mix) in each net and the kids have to try and score on each goal) and work on shooting (focus on stiff ankles and hitting with laces if you can) and using those goalie skills

Dribbling and defending

Turn & Burn
Divide players into two teams – put them in different colored pinnis One team starts on one end of the grid with a ball each. Objective is for players with the ball to dribble towards the players without, who remain stationary. The coach shouts “Turn” and the players with the ball stop, turn and try to dribble back to their starting line. When the players without the ball here the coach shout “Turn” he players without the ball can release and try and steal the balls of the apposing team before they get back over the safe line. Take turns having both teams being attackers/defenders. Do not eliminate players who lose their ball. Let them have another go.
Variations: Introduce specific turns: big toe turn, little toe turn, pull back, etc.

Games!  Have fun!

U8 practice plans - June 11/13

Focus skill: off ball movement & concept of wall pass/give and go
Much of the game of soccer is spent without a ball so the idea of moving into space to receive a ball is very important.
Some of these drills will be challenging for this age group....if needed modify accordingly.

Warm up & agility:  Obstacle course use the arches, ladders, hurdles and cones and create an obstacle course that uses balls and no balls.  So have a section where they start with balls and then they pass the ball to coach/parent and then "move" through a section without the ball (ladders for example) looking to receive their ball in a new spot of the course.  You could have a couple of these pass off sections for a non ball section of obstacle course...be creative.

Game:  Alley soccer - coaching the concept of width but also passing to outside and then moving to receive the ball again.  Set up field with two alleys on each side of your field.  Have one person for each team in the alleys, no checking in the alleys and only designated players can be in the alley.  They must use the alley before they can attempt to score (you will need to coach this).  If short on numbers have a coach play one alley and then they play back to the team that gave them the ball.  The designated alley players stay in the alley until coach switches them.

Technical session:

-Grid with cones on the edges.  In pairs they pass to their partner and then run (med speed) to cone on outside go around it and then cut at speed for a pass from their partner.  Worry more about running around cone and cutting for a new pass into space.  Make rid quite large so that there is lots of room to work with.

-Passing and Moving Drill (working on following your pass and opening up as you receive...first drill on link only)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8T8QoW17XA

-Basic Give and Go Drill
Start with a "dummy" defender/cone...move to live defender.  Have them shoot after wall pass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaYLRaRdh6I
move to this drill
http://betterfootball.net/soccer-drills/passing-drills/give-and-go-passing-dril/

Game:  inter-squad scrimmage, two teams, two goals, regular rules....coach pass and move

U10 practice plans - week of June 11 & 13

Kendra will be at both your practices this week.
U10 girls, we will do a round of stations this week.  I will do a mass warm up -10 minutes.  Then we will split up and start stations (8-10 minutes per station...I will blow the whistle to move in a counter clockwise direction).  We will run 4 stations and each coaching pair will have a built in break.
U10 boys, you will run your own practices and then boys have a mixed scrimmage, I may email you to see if we can swap mixed scrimmage to next week and run a practice this week...if you don't hear from me it will be mixed scrimmage.

Focus:  off ball movement
Much of the game of soccer is spent without the ball so what are we doing when we don't have the ball?  Start to introduce the ideas of support, width, and also the basic give and go!

Warm up:  Dribble grid (use both feet, pulls, toe taps, tictocs, turns and dribble to a cone on the outside and then go around it 2x in one direction and 2x in the other--- move to players trying to hit each others ball with their ball (one point for each hit...try playing to five.  Then play a game of shark, remind them of basic shielding....could do this before playing hit other peoples balls.

Agility Relays, set up some agility equipment and do some basic relays.

Game:  Alley Soccer (Natalie/Arlana)
Create two alleys on either side of your field
Working on width.  Can not check the allies or go in the allies, only ally players can be in the alley.  If you are short on numbers have one person play in the ally and play to whomever passed them the ball or have a coach in one alley doing this and then two players in the other alley.  In order to try and score the team must complete one pass to the alley

(Matt & Renee)
Basic pass and move drill that works on opening up, this is very important for players anywhere on the field but especially on the wings (width).

-Passing and Moving Drill (working on following your pass and opening up as you receive...first drill on link only)

(Josh & Isaac)
-Basic Give and Go Drill
Start with a "dummy" defender/cone...move to live defender.  Have them shoot after wall pass.
move to this drill

(Kendra)

More complex drill to work on passing and moving and width and support.  Modify according to numbers of players, can have a coach or parent play in the squares too.

Games - inter-squad scrimmage

U13 boys & girls week of June 11 & 13

U13 Boys - will run stations - Chris Macdonald (or another designated coach) will run a mass warm up with the group and then you will break into stations, with time at the end to work with your own team again on something specific or scrimmage. Chris or designated coach will blow whistle every 8-10 minutes to switch.
U13 Girls - Rory will be at your practices this week.  We will swap mass practice in this week and play mixed scrimmages next week as it's the last week and we need to evaluate players anyhow so this will make it easier.  Each coach will run their own practices and Rory will either run a station and have each group cycle through or come by each of your practices and work with your team.  (HOPE this works for EVERYONE!)

Focus skill: off ball movement and width & depth/support

Warm up-
Boys -Mass warm up led by Chris Macdonald or another designated coach

Girls-individual team warm up is numbers passing game.  Each player gets a number and then they must pass to the next number 1 passes to two, two to three etc...go this way a couple of times and then go in reverse order.  The girls must be in constant motion without the ball and talking to help team mates.  Cut to the ball to receive pass when it's your turn.  They may not pass in a circle, get them moving.  Then add a defender (or two).  (get them working on opening up to the play, width, support etc...).

Game:  Alley soccer (Erik S)
Create two alleys on either side of your field and put a player from each team or if numbers are short one player in the alley who then must pass back to the team who played them the ball.  Focus on playing to width (wingers in the alley).  In order to score must use the alley once (twice?).  You may not check the alley players and only alley players allowed in the alley.

Technical session:

(Johannes & Felix)
Basic pass and move focus on opening up drill - very important for all players but particularly wing players.(working on following your pass and opening up as you receive...first drill on link only)

(Chris and Aiden)
Basic 2v1 in a grid.  Focus on good first touch and passing angles and moving after you pass the ball to always establish a better passing angle.

(Corbett)

2v2 +1 drill.  Working still on passing angles and support of the ball, using shape to get shooting chances and the uneven number.

Game:  intersquad scrimmage with your team.

Lost and Found

Hello Coaches,
Are players leaving behind clothes and/or soccer equipment?
It ends up inside the soccer equipment shed.
Please advise parents and players that they can locate missing items inside the shed during youth soccer practice and playing times.

U 4/5 - June 5

Crazy Hair Day!! Looking forward to seeing your creative hair stye on Wednesday.

Stations this week.
Same set up as a couple of weeks ago. Please find ways to get the parent involved and having fun.

2 sets of 4 stations will be set up.  Each Coach will run one station for the entire time.  Teams 1-4 will be one set of stations and teams 5-8 will be the second set of stations.  Please arrive with enough time to set up your station.  I will switch the stations every 8 minutes. There will not be a game at the end of the session. Rather, each team will have an opportunity to play a scrimmage as part of the stations. Use parents to help move kids to next station and participate where necessary.  If you are coaching your child and they don't feel they can move through stations with another parent or the other coach on your team, just keep them with you until they are comfortable to move on. Remember to walk or jog the boundary of your area/drill with kids.  Have players partner up with their caregiver for any partner activities.  At end of session we will have a BIG cheer, a snack and social.  Don't forget to give a water break especially if it's warmer out!

Station #1: Pac Man Gird (15x15)  Lillian/Pat and Kelly/Meghan
All kids have ball and try to hit you with a pass (you don't want to be hit).  Working on good passing technique.  You may have to create a zone for you that the kids can't enter (small square in middle of grid and then move to no square and everyone moving). You can progress to them kicking the ball with their laces and trying to hit you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9AJNANVrRA
(this video all demos passing technique with cues.

Station #2- Hairy Numbers Game    Elmer, Dan, Jocelyn/ Patrick
Set up a small grid with goals at both ends.  Separate players into 2 teams lined up at each end beside their goal.  Number players 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Call out a number. Coach rolls out ball at center line and numbered player on each team must try to win ball and then either defend their goal or attack the other goal. Progress to calling out more than one number and encourage players on same team to work together to score. . Add a goalkeeper

Station #3: Ball Literacy - Nuts and Squirrels   Kristine/Jesse
Teams are divided into 3/4 groups - each group is given a different colored pinni. All the balls positioned in middle square. On coaches command 1 player from each group collects a ball (nut) from the middle. Player dribbles ball back to their triangle (tree) – next player can go when the ball is stopped in the triangle. When the coach stops the game, the team with the most balls (nuts) in their triangle wins the game. You may want to start game with players bringing balls back with their hands then move onto them dribbling ball back.

Station #4: Scrimmage: 3 v 3 small field.    Megan, Mark/Nikki,Steph

Have a hairy time!

U 6 - June 5

Station #2: Ball Literacy - Hairy Shark attack    Natalie, Alexis and Chloe
Coach to review dribbling skills and how to protect your ball from  others (sharks).
Players have a ball each. Players must keep ball within a defined area . What out for the shark (coach) who will come and try to take balls away from the players. If player's balls is kicked out they must leave the grid and practice a skill (3 toe taps etc) and then they should return to grid. You can progress to having players as sharks and they try to steal a ball from a player and k

Station #3: Ball Literacy - Nuts and Squirrels    Koreen and Marek
Teams are divided into 3/4 groups - each group is given a different colored pinni. All the balls positioned in middle square. Station #6: Scrimmage: 3 v 3, small field   James

Have a hairiy time!

U 13 Boys and Girls AND U10 Boys and Girls - Week of June 4

U13 boys and girls AND U10 boys and girls practice - week of June 4

Stations this week.

Focus skill: Ball control

We have not had stations at the U 13 level this year so we are excited to run them this week.
For U-10 boys and girls as well as U-13 girls we will split the teams into four groups and cycle through the stations.
U 10 boys and girls: Team #3 will have two practices this week. Please look at previous posts to see which practice you have not done in the past.
U 10 girls: Mixed game on Thursday. Look at post later in the week to find out more about the mixed game.

Wonderful seeing coaches arrive early to have their field set up for their practice. A reminder to set up an area and activity for players to engage in as they wait for the practice to start. Sometimes, unstructured time at the beginning of a practice can lead to a more challenging practice. One idea is to have players can be asked to use a designated grid area to see how many juggles they can perform without the ball hitting the turf.

After coaches have had an opportunity to collect their players, Kendra or Rory will run a whole group warm up at the beginning of practice working on ball control.

Coaches will then run one station that all teams will cycle through.
Teams will move to next station every 10 minutes.
Coaches will have about 20 minutes at the end of the stations to work with their team on a favourite activity on ball control or to further develop a skill such as attacking, defending, or shooting.

Check out this site on ball control:
http://www.soccerperformance.org/training/ballcontrol.htm

Coaching points receiving:
-be in ready/athletic position so you can move in any direction
- place controlling surface (side of foot, thigh, chest ..) into line of flight of ball
-make first touch playable, either cushioning ball to keep the ball close or wedging it to move it away from you to play onto.

Station #1 Circle drill - receiving the pass.  (U-13 Eric Scarcella/Randy) (U-10 Rory/Kendra or an assistant coach)Half players on outside of circle with balls, half on inside of circle no balls. Players on inside make cuts to ball, receive a pass, control the pass and in two touches pass back to outside player, then cut and call for a new ball.  Switch inside to outside and do same (or servers and non servers).  Start with passes on ground with feet. Progress to underhand tosses to feet or thigh, then to tosses to chest. Progress to one touch back to server. Finish off with players receiving ball and choosing to pass back to server or to turn and pass to another player on outside of circle. Lots of options. Key is for them to control ball with different parts of the the body and to distribute it.

Receiving the ball under pressure: (U-13 Aiden Silzer, Kevin B.)
Create a 15x15 grid, one person at each corner with ball, or have two with balls and two without so there are passing options.  Two people in ctr of grid one is the attacker and one the defender.  Attacker has to cut to ball, receive and return the ball or use a passing option

Passing and moving, super basic drill  (U-13 Johannes, Felix/Heidi) (U-10 Jeff , Renee/Mattew)
Set up two lines of cones, passing distance apart.  Pass across to opposite side, follow pass.  Receive with one foot, pass with the other.  Once ball gets to end dribble ball back to start of line.  Get a second & third? ball going to ensure people are alert and on their toes.  Just watch video for drill pattern, you will note that they are not doing a good job of receiving with one foot and passing with the other.  I really want you to work on this good first touch.

Uneven Game: (U-13 Corbett/Head Coach or Assistant Coach) (U-10 Mitch/Abbie , Isaac/Josh)
In a 20x20 grid split your team into an uneven number of players such as 6 vs 3.
Give the smaller number pinnies. The larger group's goal is to make 10 passes without the ball either leaving the grid or ball being won by the defenders. Pinney's goal is to win ball and make 3 passes. Losing team does 10 pushups. Switch players often.  Focus on good first touch so set up for a pass and using space within the grid.

Here are some suggestions for activities you can do after stations with your group that continue to build on controlling and distributing the ball.

Four corners drill
Set up small grids, four people per grid.  Three people on corner cones, one defender.  Always fill the empty cones next to passer...so someone is always moving to be one pass away (not across the grid).  They people on Offence don't need to receive exactly on corners, could be on side as everyone is moving.  If Defender gets ball they switch out.
Working on passing, good first touch, triangles

First touch and Pass Drill
Watch video!!
This may be more challenging for some, get them to just start slow and get faster as they can.  I would make two lines of cones, line up on opposite ends of two lines so they are working both feet and less standing.  Working on good first touch

Receiving the pass, box drill  (this is a super basic shuttle drill only use if need to stay basic).  Four cones (square) and one cone in the middle, two or three people at each corner.  Ball at two corners, dribble to line opposite you leaving ball with person at front of line.  Working a continuous shuttle motion (quick review of dribbling).  Add a ball at each corner for increased difficulty, forcing them look up as they go through the ctr of grid.   Move quickly to passing half way, just past ctr. cone, once they have cleared the busy middle.  Progress to passer playing a super passive defence so first touch is around the defender.  Then to increase difficulty and thinking, dribble to middle, pass square one way and cut opposite direction.

Triangle drill, pass to one partner, run between two partners to receive next pass, work on opening up for pass and receive with one foot, pass with the other.

U 8 Boys and Girls - Week of June 4

U 8 Boys and Girls - week of June 4

Focus skill: Ball control

Great work on stations last week!

Wonderful seeing coaches arrive early to have their field set up for their practice. A reminder to set up an area and activity for players to engage in as they wait for the practice to start. Sometimes, unstructured time at the beginning of a practice can lead to a more challenging practice. One idea is to have players see how many juggles they can perform without the ball hitting the turf.

Check out this site on ball control:

Coaching points receiving:
-be in ready/athletic position so you can move in any direction
- place controlling surface (side of foot, thigh, chest ..) into line of flight of ball
-make first touch playable, either cushioning ball to keep the ball close or wedging it to move it away from you to play onto.

Warm Up: Have players start their warm up similar to last week, warming up their bodies doing different movements within the forest
area. Then have them bring a ball into the grid and challenge them to throw a ball up into the air and catch it with their hands, then to jump up and catch it, then to throw it and control it with their foot, with their thigh, with different parts of their feet (inside, outside, laces).

Remember with all of these activities to demonstrate how the skill is to be performed.

Circle drill - receiving the pass.   Half players on outside of circle with balls, half on inside of circle no balls. Players on inside make cuts to ball, receive a pass, control the pass and in two touches pass back to outside player, then cut and call for a new ball.  Switch inside to outside and do same (or servers and non servers).  Start with passes on ground with feet. Progress to short underhand tosses to feet or thigh.  Finish off with players receiving ball and choosing to pass back to server or to turn and pass to another player on outside of circle. Lots of options. Key is for them to control ball with different parts of the the body and to distribute it.
