U 13 Boys and Girls AND U10 Boys and Girls - Week of June 4

U13 boys and girls AND U10 boys and girls practice - week of June 4

Stations this week.

Focus skill: Ball control

We have not had stations at the U 13 level this year so we are excited to run them this week.
For U-10 boys and girls as well as U-13 girls we will split the teams into four groups and cycle through the stations.
U 10 boys and girls: Team #3 will have two practices this week. Please look at previous posts to see which practice you have not done in the past.
U 10 girls: Mixed game on Thursday. Look at post later in the week to find out more about the mixed game.

Wonderful seeing coaches arrive early to have their field set up for their practice. A reminder to set up an area and activity for players to engage in as they wait for the practice to start. Sometimes, unstructured time at the beginning of a practice can lead to a more challenging practice. One idea is to have players can be asked to use a designated grid area to see how many juggles they can perform without the ball hitting the turf.

After coaches have had an opportunity to collect their players, Kendra or Rory will run a whole group warm up at the beginning of practice working on ball control.

Coaches will then run one station that all teams will cycle through.
Teams will move to next station every 10 minutes.
Coaches will have about 20 minutes at the end of the stations to work with their team on a favourite activity on ball control or to further develop a skill such as attacking, defending, or shooting.

Check out this site on ball control:

Coaching points receiving:
-be in ready/athletic position so you can move in any direction
- place controlling surface (side of foot, thigh, chest ..) into line of flight of ball
-make first touch playable, either cushioning ball to keep the ball close or wedging it to move it away from you to play onto.

Station #1 Circle drill - receiving the pass.  (U-13 Eric Scarcella/Randy) (U-10 Rory/Kendra or an assistant coach)Half players on outside of circle with balls, half on inside of circle no balls. Players on inside make cuts to ball, receive a pass, control the pass and in two touches pass back to outside player, then cut and call for a new ball.  Switch inside to outside and do same (or servers and non servers).  Start with passes on ground with feet. Progress to underhand tosses to feet or thigh, then to tosses to chest. Progress to one touch back to server. Finish off with players receiving ball and choosing to pass back to server or to turn and pass to another player on outside of circle. Lots of options. Key is for them to control ball with different parts of the the body and to distribute it.

Receiving the ball under pressure: (U-13 Aiden Silzer, Kevin B.)
Create a 15x15 grid, one person at each corner with ball, or have two with balls and two without so there are passing options.  Two people in ctr of grid one is the attacker and one the defender.  Attacker has to cut to ball, receive and return the ball or use a passing option

Passing and moving, super basic drill  (U-13 Johannes, Felix/Heidi) (U-10 Jeff , Renee/Mattew)
Set up two lines of cones, passing distance apart.  Pass across to opposite side, follow pass.  Receive with one foot, pass with the other.  Once ball gets to end dribble ball back to start of line.  Get a second & third? ball going to ensure people are alert and on their toes.  Just watch video for drill pattern, you will note that they are not doing a good job of receiving with one foot and passing with the other.  I really want you to work on this good first touch.

Uneven Game: (U-13 Corbett/Head Coach or Assistant Coach) (U-10 Mitch/Abbie , Isaac/Josh)
In a 20x20 grid split your team into an uneven number of players such as 6 vs 3.
Give the smaller number pinnies. The larger group's goal is to make 10 passes without the ball either leaving the grid or ball being won by the defenders. Pinney's goal is to win ball and make 3 passes. Losing team does 10 pushups. Switch players often.  Focus on good first touch so set up for a pass and using space within the grid.

Here are some suggestions for activities you can do after stations with your group that continue to build on controlling and distributing the ball.

Four corners drill
Set up small grids, four people per grid.  Three people on corner cones, one defender.  Always fill the empty cones next to passer...so someone is always moving to be one pass away (not across the grid).  They people on Offence don't need to receive exactly on corners, could be on side as everyone is moving.  If Defender gets ball they switch out.
Working on passing, good first touch, triangles

First touch and Pass Drill
Watch video!!
This may be more challenging for some, get them to just start slow and get faster as they can.  I would make two lines of cones, line up on opposite ends of two lines so they are working both feet and less standing.  Working on good first touch

Receiving the pass, box drill  (this is a super basic shuttle drill only use if need to stay basic).  Four cones (square) and one cone in the middle, two or three people at each corner.  Ball at two corners, dribble to line opposite you leaving ball with person at front of line.  Working a continuous shuttle motion (quick review of dribbling).  Add a ball at each corner for increased difficulty, forcing them look up as they go through the ctr of grid.   Move quickly to passing half way, just past ctr. cone, once they have cleared the busy middle.  Progress to passer playing a super passive defence so first touch is around the defender.  Then to increase difficulty and thinking, dribble to middle, pass square one way and cut opposite direction.

Triangle drill, pass to one partner, run between two partners to receive next pass, work on opening up for pass and receive with one foot, pass with the other.

staying with the square working on a support type pass:  see part two of diagram:  http://www.bettersoccercoaching.com/Article-823--1--Team-drill-for-passing-skills
